Replacing a worn-out cast iron or clay sewer line

When a camera inspection shows breaks, sags or roots along most of your lateral, spot repairs stop making sense. Replacing the line fixes the problem for decades, and trenchless methods often keep your yard intact.

When replacement beats repair

Short answer: replace the line when the camera shows problems along much of its length, or when you’ve already paid for repeated clearing and a spot repair.

These findings usually push the decision toward replacement:

  • Several cracked or broken sections, not just one
  • Joints separated or offset along much of the run
  • Sags where water and waste sit in the pipe
  • Cast iron so scaled or thinned that it’s flaking inside
  • Roots at many joints of a clay line
  • A section that has partly collapsed

Three ways to replace a lateral

Pipe bursting: the plumber digs a small pit at each end of the line and pulls a bursting head through the old pipe. It breaks the old pipe outward while drawing new pipe in behind it, usually HDPE. This works well on clay and cast iron, and it needs only two small holes.

Lining: a flexible liner soaked in resin is pulled into the old pipe, inflated and cured in place. The result is a smooth new pipe inside the old one. It suits lines that are cracked but still hold their shape, and it slightly reduces the pipe’s inside diameter.

Open trench: the plumber digs along the whole route, removes the old pipe and lays new pipe at the correct slope. It’s the most disruptive option, but it’s the right one for badly sagging or collapsed lines, and it lets the plumber fix the slope along the full length.

Ask each plumber which method they’d use and why. A good answer will point to what the camera showed in your line.

Permits, the street and your neighbors

Sewer replacement needs a permit, and the city inspects the new line before it’s covered. In Whittier, the city asks for a camera video with distance measurements before it issues a lateral repair permit.

If the work reaches the sidewalk or the street, extra permits apply. La Habra, for example, requires an encroachment permit before anyone excavates in the public right-of-way. Your plumber should arrange this, but check that it’s in the quote.

The cost of that street section usually falls on you. La Habra’s code makes the owner responsible for the lateral up to and including the connection at the main, including the part under the street. LA County Public Works, which maintains mains for cities in its sewer maintenance district, says the same about ownership of the whole lateral.

What sewer replacement costs in Whittier

These factors usually drive the price:

  • The length of the lateral and how deep it runs
  • The method, since trenchless and trench jobs are priced differently
  • Driveways, patios, trees and landscaping over the route
  • Work in the street, with its extra permits and traffic control
  • Adding a two-way cleanout, which makes future access far easier

Timing it around the seasons

Winter storms from December to March are when failing laterals tend to back up. Replacement jobs, on the other hand, tend to cluster from spring through autumn, when dry ground makes digging easier. If your camera inspection shows trouble in the fall, it can be worth booking the work before the rains arrive.

What you can do yourself

This one is worth a DIY try first: get copies of every camera video and quote, and compare them side by side. The footage shows whether two plumbers are describing the same problem.

The replacement itself needs a licensed contractor, permits and inspections. Digging also requires calling 811 first to have gas, power and water lines marked.

Looking after the new line

  • Ask for a two-way cleanout at the property line if you don’t have one.
  • Keep grease and wipes out of the drains, even with a new pipe.
  • Keep the final inspection record and the camera video of the new line with your house papers.

FAQ

Sewer replacement: common questions

How much does it cost to replace a sewer line in Whittier?

Length, depth, the method used and anything sitting on top of the line, such as a driveway, make the biggest difference. Ask each plumber for a written price before the work starts, and compare two quotes line by line.

How long does a sewer replacement take?

A trenchless replacement on a typical lateral is often done in a day or two, while an open trench job can take several days. Permits and inspections add time before and after the work itself.

Can I use the toilets during the work?

Not while the line is cut. Plumbers usually plan the work so the outage is as short as possible, and you'll be told when it's safe to run water again.

Is trenchless always better?

Not always. It avoids a long trench, but a line with severe sags, collapsed sections or tight bends may still need digging, and a camera inspection is how the plumber decides.

Do I pay for the part under the street?

In many local cities, yes. La Habra's code makes the owner responsible up to and including the connection at the main, and LA County Public Works says the owner owns the whole lateral, including the part under the street.
