Start with where it’s weak
Short answer: if one fixture is weak, look at that fixture. If every fixture is weak, look at the main valve, the pressure regulator and then the pipes.
That single question narrows things down fast, so walk the house and turn on each faucet and shower. Note which ones are weak, and whether the hot side, the cold side or both are affected.
Cause 1: a clogged aerator or showerhead
Old galvanized pipe sheds rust flakes, and they collect in the screen at the tip of the faucet. Unscrew the aerator, rinse the screen under the tap and check the flow again before moving on. Showerheads can be soaked in vinegar overnight to dissolve mineral buildup.
If that brings the pressure back, the pipes are still passing water, but the flakes are a sign of corrosion upstream.
Cause 2: a valve that isn’t fully open
Check the main shutoff where the water enters the house, and the small valves under sinks and toilets. After a repair or a meter reading, a valve is sometimes left partly closed. Old gate valves can also break inside, leaving the handle turning while the gate stays half down.
Cause 3: the pressure regulator
Many homes have a pressure regulator on the main line, usually a bell-shaped fitting near the shutoff. When a regulator fails, pressure can drop throughout the house. A gauge on an outside hose bib shows the pressure you’re getting. If it’s well below what your neighbors have, the regulator is a likely suspect, and a plumber can adjust or replace it.
Cause 4: corroded galvanized pipe
If the aerators are clean, the valves are open and the regulator checks out, the pipes themselves are the most likely cause. Galvanized steel rusts from the inside, and after sixty years the opening can shrink to a fraction of its original size.
These signs point to the pipes:
- Pressure is weak everywhere, on hot and cold
- The first water in the morning is brown or orange
- Pressure has dropped slowly over years rather than suddenly
- A magnet sticks to the pipe where it enters the house
Why Whittier homes hit this so often
Whittier has many homes built before 1960, when galvanized steel was the standard supply pipe. Those houses have had decades for rust to build up inside the lines, so fading pressure is a predictable problem in older neighborhoods here. The same pattern shows up in the older neighborhoods of Pico Rivera and Norwalk.
What to do next
If you’ve traced it to the pipes, you have two choices. A partial repipe replaces the worst sections, usually near the main or the water heater. A whole-house repipe replaces everything, which costs more but ends the problem.
